Menstrual underwear products often rely on synthetic components linked to environmental harm and potential health risks. Through extensive research, the environmental impact of existing materials and the health concerns related to synthetics such as polyester and PFAS were examined. Lab-based material testing was conducted on TENCEL\u2122 Modal, assessing comfort, absorbency, and thermal properties using the Kawabata Evaluation System, Wick Test, and Thermal Conductivity Test. The findings supported its use as a breathable and skin-compatible base fabric. The final product concept featured a TENCEL\u2122 body, a banana fibre absorbent core, and a compostable PLA barrier &#8211; each selected for their biodegradability, functionality, and health-conscious properties. This outcome demonstrates the potential of material innovation and reflective design thinking in creating inclusive, sustainable fashion solutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--FILE02 IMG--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mediafileviewer mfvimages\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading =\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofdesignleeds.com\/ds25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Genevieve-Holding-02.jpg\" width=\"100%\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1980px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1980\/1114;\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mfv-caption\"><strong>PROJECT GREENTHREAD*<\/strong>: This project proposes a sustainable alternative to wool within Marks &#038; Spencer\u2019s knitwear range by introducing a hemp-based solution. Responding to the company\u2019s 2024 ESG Report &#8211; which shows only 29% progress towards its 2030 sustainable wool goal &#8211; this project addresses key environmental and ethical issues associated with conventional wool production, such as high greenhouse gas emissions, land and water use, and animal welfare concerns. The proposed innovation recommends a partnership between M&#038;S and SeFF, a Leeds-based manufacturer producing low-impact hemp fibres. SeFF\u2019s materials offer a strong environmental profile while aligning with rising consumer interest in ethical and traceable fashion. Drawing on trend insights from WGSN\u2019s TrendCurve+, the project supports market relevance and forecasting accuracy. GreenThread not only outlines practical next steps for implementing hemp fibre in knitwear but also highlights the broader benefits for M&#038;S -including lower emissions, enhanced brand image, and supply chain improvements. By integrating hemp innovation into its product offering, M&#038;S can strengthen its leadership in sustainable retail, meet stakeholder expectations and push forward meaningful environmental change within the fashion industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--FILE03 IMG--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mediafileviewer mfvimages\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading =\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofdesignleeds.com\/ds25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Genevieve-Holding-03.jpg\" width=\"100%\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1430px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1430\/803;\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mfv-caption\"><strong>FASHION AS SECOND SKIN<\/strong>: One of the future directions of sustainable fashion is collaboration with biotech researchers to make all products biodegradable, durable, and non-polluting. This will help brands move away from their fast fashion identities. Clothing could also support physical health through its very composition. Fabrics may be infused with vitamins, minerals, or probiotics that are absorbed through the skin, offering benefits during and after wear.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\ndocument.getElementById(\"withme\").innerHTML = document.getElementById(\"studentpostname\").innerHTML;\ndocument.addEventListener(\"scroll\", function(){\nvar sitedescription = document.querySelector(\".site-description\");\nvar studenttitle = document.getElementById(\"studentpostname\");\nif(window.pageYOffset > 100){\nsitedescription.classList.add(\"highlightstudentname\");\nsitedescription.innerHTML = studenttitle.innerHTML;\n}\nif(window.pageYOffset < 100){\nsitedescription.classList.remove(\"highlightstudentname\");\nsitedescription.innerHTML = \"School of Design, University of Leeds\";\n}\n});\n\/*Heart a submission\nlet theheart = document.getElementById(\"heartsvg\"); \/\/ assign the SVG class to a variable called theheart\nlet lsheart = localStorage.getItem(\"onheart\"); \/\/ access a key called onheart in LS, and assign it to a variable called lsheart\nlet heartmsg = document.getElementById(\"heartmessage\");\nconst enableheart = () => { \/\/ create a function to colour in the SVG when the SVG is clicked\ntheheart.classList.add(\"activeheart\"); \/\/ tell the function to add a class to the SVG that will add colour\nheartmsg.innerHTML = \"You liked this submission\";\nheartmsg.classList.add(\"addpinkcolor\");\nlocalStorage.setItem(\"onheart\", \"enabled\"); \/\/ activate LS with the key and a value, hereby called enabled\n};\nconst disableheart = () => { \/\/ create a function to remove colour from the SVG when the SVG is clicked\ntheheart.classList.remove(\"activeheart\"); \/\/ tell the function to remove the class from the SVG that added colour\nheartmsg.innerHTML = \"Like this submission\";\nheartmsg.classList.remove(\"addpinkcolor\");\nlocalStorage.setItem(\"onheart\", \"disabled\"); \/\/ activate LS with the same key but a new value, hereby called disabled\n};\nif(lsheart === \"enabled\"){ \/\/ if the LS key has a value of enabled then...\nenableheart(); \/\/ ...run the enableheart function, which adds the class to the SVG\n}\ntheheart.addEventListener(\"click\", function(){ \/\/ when the SVG is clicked...\nlsheart = localStorage.getItem(\"onheart\"); \/\/ ...I think the LS needs to run on itself\nif(lsheart === \"enabled\"){ \/\/ if the LS key has a value of enabled...\ndisableheart(); \/\/ ...run the function that changes the LS value to disabled\n} else { \/\/ otherwise...\nenableheart(); \/\/ ...run the function that changes the LS value to enabled\n}\n});\n*\/\n<\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Degree Show 2025 Genevieve Holding BA Sustainable Fashion Hi, I\u2019m Genevieve Holding, a final-year BA Sustainable Fashion student. handshakeConnect with FLO: 0 [Flo_Zero]: This project involved reimagining menstrual underwear through non-synthetic, skin-sensitive and hormone-safe materials to support wellbeing and accelerate a more sustainable future.
