This project ‘Second Wave: Denim Rewoven’ explores sustainability, identity, heritage and the concept of post-production, redesigning the quintessentially British Trench coat by upcycling denim jeans. Memory and history are intertwined in our clothing, like a woven fabric (denim). My design utilises Japanese textile techniques and the larger weave is a nod to the extensive history of denim. Recreating the same twill pattern but on a larger scale to highlight the craftmanship involved. In the installation, the overflowing “sea” of denim represents overconsumption, overproduction and the extremely water intensive processes involved. This modular design bridges art, fashion and social commentary aiming to spark conversation around sustainability.

The multi-use design can be adapted multiple ways to maximise utility: as a trench coat, jacket, vest and even a bag.
