Jie Wang

BA Art and Design

Jie Wang is a Leeds-based artist whose practice explores themes of diaspora, memory, architecture and belonging. Rooted in her personal experience, her work reflects on the emotional landscape of displacement and the remnants of home. Working with a variety of materials, often textile, woodwork and paper, she creates sculptural installations that invite reflection on identity, time and loss. Her process blends research with intuitive making, crafting spaces where personal and collective histories can coexist.

The Palimpsest jesmonite, silk, and wool In this mixed media installation, the artist explores the interaction between the human and the environment over time, through a study of the weathered walls in her hometown Beihai, China. Imprinted with signs produced by time as well as marks from the living activities of past and current residents, these textured walls witness and bear memories of the people and the city. Through this metaphorical installation, the artist also invites the audience to reflect: aren’t we all human beings also a palimpsest, just like these walls?
