Kate Bush

BA Graphic and Communication Design

My name is Kate, and my work centres around how we can use design to provide solutions to social problems. My recent work, via my degree and an internship with the University of Leeds, has focused on how we can improve the student experience through more communicative design, and innovative experience design. After studying for a year in Sydney and completing my BA here in Leeds, I am continuing my studies at the Beijing Normal University in China, where I hope to learn more about the future of international innovative design.

This is a speculative Virtual Reality onboarding program for conservation volunteers at the Daintree Rainforest. This design creates opportunity for team expansion, whilst conserving essential resources. Volunteers can download the training course, and complete it virtually using a Virtual Reality headset. By remotely training volunteers on Observation and Interaction skills, this means the charity can reallocate all resources previously used for training back to conservation tasks. Overall, the Daintree Rainforest benefits as a higher volume of conservation can be achieved, and this in turn will reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere.

This immersive sensory experience provides a new angle for student support here at the University of Leeds. Based in the Treasures of Brotherton Gallery, this experience engages with therapeutic and neuroscience principles to calm down individuals in moments of stress. Users can work through 5 tailored sensory stations, which target individual senses to ground an anxious mind. With the Student Services experiencing an extremely high demand from the students, this project aims to reduce pressure on this team, and improve student wellbeing.
