BA Sustainable Fashion

I’m Emelia, a final year BA Sustainable Fashion (IND) student. My work this year has primarily focused on fabric and product innovation, as I’m passionate about creating new sustainable alternatives using fabrics of natural origin. Post university I am going to work in fashion buying where the product knowledge and industry insights I have gained during my degree will be utilised.

Fung is an emerging handbag brand that uses innovative technologies to drive a more sustainable future for accessories. It combines timeless craftsmanship with biomaterials, embedding sustainability without compromising sophistication. The leather industry is extremely damaging to the environment, producing around 22.48kg of CO2 per square metre, alongside ethical concerns regarding animal exploitation for every metre squared of leather produced (Leather Working Group, 2024; Jhanji, 2023). While synthetic alternatives are widely used, they rely on fossil fuels and emit hazardous chemicals. Fung addresses this by using mycelium-based leather – a fungi-derived that emulates the look and feel of leather but is better for the environment, aligning with consumer values. This report analyses Fung’s products, supply chain, core values and future commitments.

Exiled provides a sustainable solution to the environmental impacts associated with conventional cotton t-shirt production. Across the entire product lifecycle, both environmental and social impacts have been minimised to support workers and protect natural ecosystems, while aligning with policy regulations and remaining commercially viable. The t-shirts have been screen printed using bio-based, carbon-negative algae ink from Living Ink. Exiled differentiates itself from other t-shirt manufacturers through authentic sustainability narratives to build trust and increase consumer loyalty.
