My work explores jazz as a visual experience through digitally painted film stills. By reworking scenes from jazz centred films, I investigated how colour, atmosphere and movement can communicated the emotional qualities of jazz without sound, changing cinematic moments into still visual experiences.

Developed from a still in the film ‘Whiplash’ (2014), this digital painting explored jazz through visual tension. The warm yellow palette reflects pressure, intensity and unease, transforming the cinematic moment into a still emotional experience. Through colour, light and movement, the piece questions whether jazz can be felt without being heard.

Developed from a still in the film ‘Mo’ Better Blues’ (1990), this digital painting explores intimacy through a performance. The warm red palette suggest ambition and emotional intensity, transforming the scene into a visual experience of jazz. Without sound, the work relies on colour, expression and movement to communicate rhythm and atmosphere.

Developed from a still in the film ‘La La Land’ (2016), this digital painting explores the quieter emotional spaces connected to jazz. The deep blue palette creates a dreamlike and reflective space, focusing on stillness within it’s audience, rather than the performance or performer. Through colour, light and negative space, the work considers how jazz can be felt visually without sound.
